Dynos compete at provincials

A dominant season by the DVSS Senior Girls Dynos volleyball team came to an end last weekend as the team competed at the 2A Provincial Tournament.
The provincial 12-team tournament was held in Wainwright from November 21- 23. The Dynos were riding high going into the tournament with a league championship and back-to-back zone championships.
In pool play, they finished second in their bracket with wins over St. Joseph’s and Webber Academy, but fell to Bearspaw Christian.
When they crossed over into the playoffs, they went three sets with Edmonton Christian but fell short. This match would have put them in the quarter-finals.
“It was pretty heartbreaking because that would have gotten us to the championship side of the bracket,” said coach Erica Crocker.
They bounced back with a win over Wainwright but finished 10 after a defeat by Lamont.
She noted the competition was stiff, with experienced teams, deep benches, and an incredible amount of talent.
“Tenth in the province among 2A schools is remarkable. This has been the most incredibly successful season that I have had with the Dynos program,” she said. “I am so proud of them, and we have the best Dyno family for sure with the families and friends. All of them travelled with us all the way to Wainwright to cheer us on the whole way. We are very grateful for it.”
This team had eight players that went to provincials the prior year and is the culmination of years of the team working together playing both school volleyball and with the Drumheller Volleyball Club. The team has grown into a tight-knit group.
“Over the years you meet so many talented young women and you hope they love the sport of volleyball and some go on to post-secondary with their opportunities to play varsity volleyball. It is an incredible feeling as a coach to have some level of involvement in their success,” she said.
She said her entire experience, with the team and the provincial tournament has been special.
“It’s sad because we lost, but we are mostly sad because it’s over. We have six graduating from Grade 12. They have left quite the legacy with the Dynos over the years, and this will be a season we will never forget.”

Dragons drop two over weekend

It was a tough weekend for the Dragons with two highly competitive games under their belt.
The Dragons hosted the Whitecourt Wolverines on Saturday, October 19 in front of 811 fans.
After a scoreless first period, Aiden Connell put the Dragons on the scoreboard 7:14 into the second period. The Dragons held the lead until the three-minute mark of the third period when the Wolverines tied it up. Just 50 seconds later Trip Jensen scored his first of the season to put the Dragons back up 2-1.
A late-game hooking penalty and an unsportsmanlike conduct call gave Whitecourt the advantage. They put away two powerplay goals to tie and then win, 3-2.
On Sunday afternoon, October 20 the Dragons headed down the highway to take on the Olds Grizzlys. So far this season they have met twice and split these games.
It was an uneventful game. Olds scored just 1:43 into the game and held on to that lead until there were just 57 seconds left, and they struck again on the empty net.
The Dagons have a busy weekend to prepare for. They are heading to Grand Prairie on Friday and Saturday, October 25 and 26 to play a back-to-back match versus the Grande Prairie Storm, and then on Sunday, they are in Whitecourt to play the Wolverines. The Dragons aren’t in the Dragon’s Den until November 1 when they play the Drayton Valley Thunder.

Just two games into the season, and it appears the Dragons and Olds Grizzlys are developing a bit of a rivalry.
The Dragons opened the regular season on the road on Friday night, September 13, against the Olds Grizzlys. The two teams met in the preseason and split games, with the Olds Grizzys eaking out a 2-1 win, and then the Dragons dominating 10-0.
On Friday night, the Grizzlys opened the scoring at the midway point, but Bradley Gallo scored five minutes later on the powerplay. Olds scored 30 seconds later to take the lead, but less than a minute later Devon Winder tied it back up, and Gallo put the Dragons up 3-2 to end the first period.
Olds opened the scoring in the second, but Aiden Connell quickly followed it up, and then Nathan Hawkins scored shorthanded to put the Dragons up 5-3 after two.
Luca Dufour added to the Dragons’ lead on the powerplay, followed by a goal from Josh Diegel. Gallo finished up his hattrick at the 14:30 mark of the third period. Olds scored one more, but Diegel added his second with 1:09 left as the Dragons went on to a 9-4 win.
On Saturday night, 733 Dragons fans filled the Drumheller Memorial Arena for the home opener. The Dragons were leading after the first period with a goal from Ellis Mieyete. The Grizzlys evened it up at the midway point of the second, but Diegel scored his third of the season, putting the Dragons up 2-1. Olds stepped it up in the third period and outshot the Dragons 12-5. It yielded two goals, resulting in a 3-2 win for the Grizzlys.
The Dragons host the Lloydminster Bobcats this Friday, September 20, and then on Saturday, head to Drayton Valley to take on the Thunder.
