The preseason is underway and the Drumheller Dragons are showing some bright spots.
The Dragons have two preseason games under their belt after completing a home and away series with the Camrose Kodiaks.
The Dragons were in Camrose on Thursday, August 29 to take on the Kodiaks. Camrose went up 3-1 in the first period. The Dragons opened the second period with a goal, but the Kodiaks answered back, ending the period 4-2.
The Dragons again struck first in the third period with two goals to tie the game at 4. The Kodiaks had the final say however and won 5-4.
On Friday night, August 30 the Dragons were back home. And they went on the offense.  Camrose scored first, but Luke Fennig scored twice in the first four minutes of the second period to go up 2-1. The Kodiaks tied it but then Myles Hillman put the Dragons back up on top early in the third. Max Kathol made it 4-2 before Camrose found the net again. A goal by Eric Martin scored on an empty net, lead to a 5-3 win.
    Tonight, Wednesday,

September 4, the Dragons are on the road to take on the defending champions Brooks Bandits. They are then in Stettler on September 6 to take on the Olds Grizzlys and wrap up exhibition play in Olds on Sunday, September 8.

Drumheller Terry Fox Foundation run cancelled due to low support

Organizers who once hoped to bring back the Terry Fox Foundation run in Drumheller are cancelling their plans due to a lack of interest by the community.
Marshall Gleiser had spearheaded organizing a run for September 15 in Drumheller, which would have a Terry Fox Foundation community run return to the valley after a number of years without one.
Gleiser, of Big Valley, and others had wanted to organize the run in honour of a family member who passed away due to cancer, but notified people on August 12 they have had to cancel their plans.
“Unfortunately our efforts fell short in attracting enough interest to make it into a successful event at this time,” he said.
While schools in the area participate in annual Terry Fox runs to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation, there has not been a community run in Drumheller for a couple years. Gleiser and other organizers hope someone else can maybe pick it up next year.
“While we are disappointed, we also hope these efforts will help to renew interest for the Terry Fox run here moving forward.”

Morrin School introduces hockey program

This fall, Morrin School will begin offering its newly developed hockey program for students in Grades 7-12.
Principal Don Yavis tells the Mail the school has been working on introducing the program for about a year. This fall, they have about 15 students registered to take part in the program.
‘It’s a go,” said Yavis. “It looks like a good start. We are going to do it for the first semester and see where it takes us, and expand it if all goes well.”
The program will include powerskating as well as skill development. The students will have three on-ice sessions a week in the afternoons, one will be dedicated to powerskating, while the rest will focus on skill development.
“Our high school kids can earn CTS credits because there is some mentoring and coaching,” explains Yavis. “It will be more skill development with the junior high kids.”
Another change for the coming school year, according to Yavis, is they have a new CTS teacher. Trevor Wasylynuik comes from a school in Grande Prairie High school and he is a journeymen welder and has taught at SAIT. He also has experience in automotive repair and mechanics.
“He is going to teach shop to the kids and he is also talking about developing some adult programming,” said Yavis.
Because he is a journeyman, this offers more options for students.
‘What this opens the door for is, if our students are interested in welding, they can take the RAP ( Registered Apprentice Program) right at school,” said Yavis. ‘So we can do some dual credit stuff, so it’s going to open the door up quite a bit.”
The school also welcomes Phoebe Amendt, who will be teaching primarily high school social studies. Mrs. Grenville will be returning this school this year on a full-time basis. She will be teaching Grade 3-4.
Registration remains strong and Yavis is projecting there will be about 125-135 students.
“It is going to be an exciting year and we are ready to roll,” he said.
The first day of classes is Tuesday, September 3.
