Rec Soccer returns for third year

soccer

In its third year, the Drumheller Coed Recreational Soccer League is looking to keep growing.
The league has expanded its membership over the first two years, and this year decided to formalize the organization by forming an executive. President Gavin Makse expects a strong turnout.
“We would anticipate after having 73 people register last year, that we would continue to grow,” said Makse. “We want to make sure that there is enough for each team so people won’t be short.”
Some of the changes they are looking at are going to full field with nine players a side and a full net.
We are going to change a few things because a lot of people didn’t like the smaller nets and the offside line, all those little things,” said Makse. “Now it will all be true FIFA rules.”
They are also looking at starting league play earlier than in previous seasons. In previous years, the season has ran late into June, which limited the participation for some of the teams as the school year ended.
They are taking registration until April 4 by contacting Makse at 403-823-0504 or contacting Lucy Deitzer at the Badlands Community Facility. More information can be found at the league’s Facebook group called Drumheller Coed Recreational Soccer League.

The DVSS Senior boy’s basketball team wrapped up the season with a strong showing at the zone tournament, winning the consolation.
The Dynos qualified for zones with a sixth place ranking and travelled to Hugh Sutherland School in Carstairs for the South Central 2A Zone tournament on the weekend of March 11 and 12.
“We did play our best basketball of the year at zone,” said coach Jeff Messom.
The teams started the tournament versus the number 3 seeded Strathcona Tweedsmuir School of Okotoks, but lost by 11 points. This put them on the consolation side of the draw to face Notre Dame Collegiate from High River.
The Dynos won by a convincing 25 points and set them up to play in the consolation final versus Prairie Christian Academy of Three Hills. Again, the Dynos showed resolve and won by 18 points.
The Dynos will see six seniors graduate from the team this year.

The Wheatland Chiefs AA Midget hockey team won back to back South Division Championships on their way to the league final.
The Chiefs, which included Drumheller players Ryan Skytt and Zachary Suntjens, as well as Hussar skaters Wacey Sandum, Jason Hobson, Jared Kirkpatrick and Mack Clark, hosted the South Central Alberta Hockey League (SCAHL) South championship in Strathmore on the Weekend of March 5.
This was after a great year for the Chiefs, finishing first in league play.
In the south final, they met Medicine Hat, a worthy foe. With 58 seconds left on the clock, Ryan Skytt scored the winner as the Chiefs went on to a 3-2 victory. Clark stopped 28 shots.
They went on to play in the league championship in a north versus south game against the Red Deer Indy. Last year the Chiefs beat Red   Deer for the top spot. This year Red Deer won. Interestingly the Red Deer team that defeated the chiefs featured former Drumheller hockey player Sam Danchek.
This was Ryan Skytt’s final season of Midget hockey. Father Jeff Skytt tells The Mail Ryan is hoping to land a spot on a junior roster and is ready to head to spring camps.
