The Wheatland Chiefs AA Midget hockey team won back to back South Division Championships on their way to the league final.
The Chiefs, which included Drumheller players Ryan Skytt and Zachary Suntjens, as well as Hussar skaters Wacey Sandum, Jason Hobson, Jared Kirkpatrick and Mack Clark, hosted the South Central Alberta Hockey League (SCAHL) South championship in Strathmore on the Weekend of March 5.
This was after a great year for the Chiefs, finishing first in league play.
In the south final, they met Medicine Hat, a worthy foe. With 58 seconds left on the clock, Ryan Skytt scored the winner as the Chiefs went on to a 3-2 victory. Clark stopped 28 shots.
They went on to play in the league championship in a north versus south game against the Red Deer Indy. Last year the Chiefs beat Red   Deer for the top spot. This year Red Deer won. Interestingly the Red Deer team that defeated the chiefs featured former Drumheller hockey player Sam Danchek.
This was Ryan Skytt’s final season of Midget hockey. Father Jeff Skytt tells The Mail Ryan is hoping to land a spot on a junior roster and is ready to head to spring camps.
