Teacher injured in Institution stabbing

A civilian teacher at the Drumheller Institution received non-life threatening injuries after being stabbed three times.

At 9:30 a.m. RCMP were called to the Drumheller Institution following a report of a stabbing Thursday morning, December 19. Investigation determined an inmate assaulted one of the teachers with a stabbing instrument while in the school classroom.

The teacher was transported to the Drumheller Health Centre to be treated for two stab wounds to the head and one to the neck. The teacher was treated and released.

The inmate identified in the investigation was taken into secure custody and charges are expected upon completion of this investigation. Names of the inmate or teacher are not being released at this time, according to RCMP.

Standard looks ahead following election

It’s been over a month since Albertans headed to the polls to choose their municipal leaders for the next four years. Since then, smaller municipalities have chosen who will be mayor and have been forging ahead with the new term.
In Standard, council elected Alan Larsen to serve a second term as the village’s mayor.
“It’s always good. We have two new councillors that were elected in October. I think we have a good combination of new people and experience,” said Larsen.
In addition to Larsen, council is composed of veterans Ron Corbiell and Adam Sommerfeldt, and newcomers Martin Gauthier and Joe Pedersen.
Council, says Larsen, has been busy with a couple projects.
“Right now, we’re in the middle of rezoning some land in the area. We’re hoping to turn some industrial land into parkland and build a path,” said Larsen. “The big thing right now is snow removal, so we’re trying to get ahead of that.”
Council will soon start looking at the upcoming budget.
“The budget is coming up. We’re going to get started on that and see how things pan out,” said Larsen.

Schools step up Philippines support

Drumheller’s three schools banded together to help the Philippines, which were devastated by Typhoon Haiyan earlier in November. In total, St. Anthony’s School, Greentree School, and Drumheller Valley Secondary School staff and students raised $3,454.71 for the Canadian Catholic Organization for Developmental Peace, who are working with Caritas Philippines and other ecumenical groups to coordinate the distribution of food, water, and shelter in affected areas. Present at the donation were, back, local Developmental Peace representative Caroline Mahoney, right, Drumheller Filipino Association member Marvin Obmina, (front) DVSS student Danna Padilla, St. Anthony’s student Jessica Williford, and Greentree student Luke Messom.
