40 million dollar lottery winner has Drumheller roots

The winner of the 40 million dollar lottery last May, is a Drumheller native.

64 year-old Tom Crist recently came forward to claim the windfall, and in a story in the Calgary Herald, said he was going to donate all the money to charity.

Tom, who recently retired and sold his company EECOL Electric, according to the story, had lost his wife Jan to cancer in February 2012. One of the charities he planned to gift part of the money to is the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic at Calgary's Foothills Hospital.

He grew up in the valley, and received his schooling here.

Tom's dad, Bill Crist ran a Texaco service station in the downtown area, and then became the administrator of the Drumheller General Hospital.

Tom’s win was the largest lottery win ever in Calgary, and is also the largest prize in the prairies and north that was won on a subscription. He plays both LOTTO MAX and LOTTO 6/49.
