Drumheller Curling Club announces line-up for 2016

The Drumheller Curling Club is having a busy season according to Heather Little.  
    The club is holding a Ladies Bonspiel January 22 to 24.  Approximately 12 to 16 teams register and if you want to join in this event, please call Lorelei at 403-820-0527.  
    Skins curling is scheduled for February 5 & 6 and is open to the first 12 paid teams. All teams are guaranteed to play 3 games, a Skills competition and a Horse Race event. This event usually fills up quickly from within the club  so if anyone would like more information, they can contact Bob at 403-823-7470.
    The Junior Bonspiel will be held February 20 and for more information or to register, please call Heather at 403-820-4787.
    The High School Zones is being held February 26 and 27.  Drumheller Valley Secondary School has two teams entered.
    On March 11-13 the Southern Alberta Curling Association Bantam Playdown’s are scheduled.
    The Mixed Bonspiel is happening  April 1-3. For more information or to register, please call Don at 403-821-0722.  
    They also have 3 Fun Nights left open to the public January 15, February 19, and March 18. There is a drop-in fee, but no need to pre-register. All ages are welcome, although kids must be accompanied and supervised on the ice by an adult. Limited equipment is available for anyone without brooms or sliders.
    Spectators are welcome for all events.

AJHL ponders draft

The New Year symbolizes not just the passing of time, but also a starting point for potential resolutions and growth.
    The Alberta Junior Hockey League looks to grow in 2016, as the Board of Governors examines the feasibility and impact of implementing a draft.
    “Ultimately, the draft would impact how teams secure and attract players to their respective programs,” states Ryan Bartoshyk, Commissioner of the AJHL. “The  approach will be multifaceted and will feature multiple layers that would dictate how our members approach the recruitment of players.”
    Vice President of the Drumheller Dragons, Rod Knelsen, had positive remarks  regarding the possible Draft.
    “Implementing a fifteen year old draft for the AJHL would not only bring great exposure to our league, but it would also be a great step forward in bringing more parity to the league.”
    A working document outlining the details will be presented to the Board in late
    February, and will be further discussed at their Annual General Meeting in May.

Kalbhen & Kenney qualify for Zone Two Ringuette at AWG 2016

    Rockyford resident Taneil Kalbhen and Redland resident Hailey Kenney have both  qualified for Zone Two Ringuette at the  2016 Alberta Winter Games.
    Kalbhen’s position is Centre while Kenney’s is defense.  Kalbhen said, “The most difficult thing is learning to play  with the new team. There were 3 tryouts with cuts and then two more tryouts before qualifying.”
    Prior to the Alberta Winter Games, they will have a chance to play against other teams.  Their first game was against Calgary Northwest and it resulted in a 5-3 win.  On January 9, they’ll  play against another Calgary team.   
    Kenney said, “Once we get there (Alberta Winter Games) it will be a lot different, meeting all the other sports teams and players.”
