Senior Titans top Olds

The senior Drumheller Titans cruised to a solid win over Olds on their way to the post season.
The Titan faced Olds on their home field on Saturday night, and Drumheller had their offense firing on all cylinders as they cruised to a 41-6 victory.
“That is the best quarter our offense has had.” Said coach Fournier.  In fact, down the stretch, officials invoked a mercy rule and saw the clock not stop.
Fournier said the team played clean and that was a big help.
“The difference is we didn’t take a whole bunch of penalties that kills drives and we kept moving the ball,” said Fournier.
He says while Olds is a young team, they are a well-coached team that will improve, and in this game, they protected the ball well not committing any turnovers.
“They didn’t give us anything we didn’t have to earn,” said Fournier. Colton Enns had a great day with two runs over 50 yards.
The road to the provincials doesn’t get any easier for the Titans. This weekend they are hosting Canmore, another team looking to the post season.
“They are another team really pushing to get into provincials and compete,” said Fournier. They are a well coached team and they can roll out well, and they can throw the ball from sideline to sideline. On defense, our DBs are going to have to have a good game because the quarterback is going to throw it,” said Fournier.
The Titans host Canmore this Saturday at 2 p.m.  Next Wednesday they play Forest Lawn in Calgary.

Sabres win silver at Zones

The St. Anthony’s Sabres hosted the South Central Zone Tier 2 Soccer Zones and came home with a silver medal.
On October 14 and 15, soccer players from throughout the zone descended on Drumheller to play in the tournament. The Sabres played well, advancing to the championship match.
“It is the best placing our high school girls soccer program has ever had,” said coach

Gavin Makse. “We have had a team for almost 10 years, and to win the silver medal is very good.”
The Sabres were second overall coming out of pool play on Friday. This puts them in a semi-final versus Highwood High on Saturday morning. They won over Highwood 2-1 to advance to the championship.
There, they met a combination team from Olds Koinonia Christian School and Hugh Sutherland School of Carstairs, and after a close battle, fell 2-0.
He explains it has been a long road for the squad. “We have 5 grade 12 players, a lot of those girls started in Grade 7 or Grade 8, and they have been playing against older teams We went in not expecting to win but it was all for the future,” said Makse. “They were playing these older girls in order to get better. I know it is tough and not much fun losing, but it will pay off long term, and we saw that today.”

Minor hockey back on ice

While we have only seen a small skiff of snow, and the crops aren’t in, hockey players are back on the ice.
The Minor Hockey season for Drumheller begins this weekend with a packed home schedule. While these are the first official games, the teams have been on the ice practicing since mid-September. The coaches and rosters have been selected, all they are waiting for is the puck to drop.
Drumheller Minor Hockey board member, Jim Eskeland, tells inSide Drumheller, while there have been a small drop in their ranks due to economic conditions and other factors such as conflicting sports, they still have two tykes teams, and three novice teams on the ice, showing a strong future for hockey in the valley.
There is one atom, and two peewee teams, one bantam and one midget squad.
For the next month, the league will be a hive of activity as play begins. In mid-November, there will be a league realignment, where teams will be graded and regrouped for parity. During this week, the association will be hosting the John Charmont Memorial Hockey Tournament, one of its flagship events.
One big change this year, the expansion of the Central Alberta Hockey League (CAHL) taking in approximately 2,500 more players. The league now has membership as far north as Stettler and Rimby.
Eskeland says this change is so teams will be able to face more and better competition, while at the same time limiting travel in a tough economic time.
The Drumheller Minor Hockey Association has always been a leader in promoting respect in sports and Eskeland says for the last two years they have implemented a Code of Conduct signed by players and parents.  Eskeland says this is a proactive step, not prompted by previous behavior, but recognition that there are passionate players, parents and fans, and this outlines expectations on the ice and in the seats.
