The St. Anthony’s Sabres hosted the South Central Zone Tier 2 Soccer Zones and came home with a silver medal.
On October 14 and 15, soccer players from throughout the zone descended on Drumheller to play in the tournament. The Sabres played well, advancing to the championship match.
“It is the best placing our high school girls soccer program has ever had,” said coach

Gavin Makse. “We have had a team for almost 10 years, and to win the silver medal is very good.”
The Sabres were second overall coming out of pool play on Friday. This puts them in a semi-final versus Highwood High on Saturday morning. They won over Highwood 2-1 to advance to the championship.
There, they met a combination team from Olds Koinonia Christian School and Hugh Sutherland School of Carstairs, and after a close battle, fell 2-0.
He explains it has been a long road for the squad. “We have 5 grade 12 players, a lot of those girls started in Grade 7 or Grade 8, and they have been playing against older teams We went in not expecting to win but it was all for the future,” said Makse. “They were playing these older girls in order to get better. I know it is tough and not much fun losing, but it will pay off long term, and we saw that today.”
