The Pure Venom bantam girls fastpitch team are reigning at the top of the Calgary Minor Softball standings with a 9-1 record so far this year, losing only last Monday.
They consist of 11 Drumheller and surrounding area players.
“The girls are doing very well, says coach Doug Peters, “we got shut out last year at provincials. We went right down to the very end and lost in the finals. It’s sparked some energy this year and we’ve been doing great.”
“Our runs for are quite high, they are almost in the extreme level,” said Peters. “We have an average of 17.5 runs per game.”
Pure Venom beat the South Bowl River 2 team 17-0 on Wednesday, following their loss to Nosecreek 12-11, their first loss of the season.
For them to enter any kind of league, they must travel up to Calgary or even farther north to the Coronation area.
“We’ve tried to have some games here, but the closest team to us is Hanna and they’ve even been having troubles getting into a league as well.”
A lot of travel means the team needs sponsorships to keep in the game, “it’s a huge commitment for everybody, but with the girls doing so well it makes it better for everyone.”
Sponsors include Freson Bros. IGA, The Pen Boarding Kennel, Ross Leffler Trucking Ltd., Drum Equipment, the Schmidt Family and Image Crafters Signs.
