Raising asthma awareness one step at a time

On August 26, the Mitchell Dawson Run/Walk for Asthma Awareness took place at the Drumheller Valley Secondary School (DVSS) running track.

The event managed to raise almost $3,000 by  collecting attendees spare change and donations made prior to the day of the Run/Walk. All funds raised will be donated to the Asthma Society of Canada.

“The turnout wasn’t as good as last year but there were many other events taking place this weekend which could have had some effect. We were just happy to be able to do something as it’s going to a good cause,” said Lindy Dawson, Mitchell’s mother.

Cody Bryant, who was a good friend of Mitchell’s and helped organize this year’s Run/Walk, said even though they didn’t have the turnout they’d expected, he will continue his fundraising efforts.

“I’m definitely going to keep fundraising whether that means going door-to-door or hosting a barbecue of some kind in the future,” said Bryant.

Dawson said she will be taking it year by year to see what sort of awareness event to hold.

“I know he’s looking down at us and smiling at what we’re doing,” said Dawson.

Mitchell Dawson passed away, two years ago, at the young age of 15 due to asthma.

Asthma is a chronic disease of the airways and is caused by both genetic and environmental factors. The Asthma Society of Canada’s website said about 500 Canadians die from asthma each year.
