Coming home from the 2012 Alberta Games, 14 year-old Drumheller resident Sam Brown didn’t leave empty handed.
Competing from July 26-29 in Lethbridge, Brown brought home with the silver medal, playing for “The Bears” basketball team in Zone 2.
“It was a great experience overall, and I had a lot of fun participating. It was a huge event. It was overwhelming at times to see how many people were there,” said Brown.
“There were kids all the way from Okotoks to Hanna. That tells you just how big Zone 2 is,” said Audrey DeBona, Brown’s mother.
The Bears played Zone 3, which is out of Calgary, in the final game. Brown said the Zone 3 team was a compilation of players he had played during the regular basketball season. He said it was the only team to beat his school team, the DVSS Dynos.
Brown said he did know a few players on the team who were from Hanna, but for the most part it was the first time meeting most of his teammates.
“I made some new friends and everyone on the team was polite and there to play the game, which was really great,” said Brown.
“It’s been a lot of fun travelling, he loves it. Now it’s off to basketball camp here soon!” said DeBona.
