Pickleball makes visitors feel welcome

Crossing the border at Abbotsford, Kathy and Dennis McKillop had no idea how much fun they would run into when visiting Drumheller.

Coming from Indio, California, the couple travelled with a group of friends for their first “Canadian Caravan 2012.”

“We visited Drumheller for the Passion Play and [Tyrrell] museum but found much more,” said Kathy McKillop.

McKillop and her husband enjoy playing pickleball at home. The group of visitors actually played in a tournament in Abbotsford upon arriving in Canada, and also played in a fun pickleball event at the West Hillhurst courts in Calgary during the last week of Stampede.

It was while grocery shopping in Drumheller where they found a copy of inSide Drumheller and read an article written about pickleball being played at the Badlands Community Facility.

“We showed up  [on July 19] at the time [written in the article] and had the best time. We made new friends, got some great exercise, and fell in love with the indoor courts because at home we play outside,” said McKillop.

It was a nice surprise said Debi Kennedy, who regularly takes in the game at the BCF.

“They were able to give us some pointers, as they have all been playing for awhile,” said Kennedy.

McKillop said her and her husband have travelled extensively but were very impressed with their trek to Drumheller.

“You can travel and say, golf, but you will probably not have the interaction you do in pickleball. All the high energy exchange and all the new friends you meet is just great. If you’ve not tried it, you must. It’s a blast!” said McKillop.
