Ewald was born in Drumheller to Edward and Emilie Leonhardt. He grew up on the farm and attended Churchill School. He attended Drumheller High School while staying at the Dormitory. He enrolled to study practical electrical applications at the Calgary School of Technology. He worked at various jobs such as fixing appliances, power line work and electrical wiring for homes and businesses. He was meticulous in his work. He bought a small farm and wanted to farm but soon realized he should go back to electrical wiring jobs. For health reasons he retired at an early age. He lived in his own home in Drumheller until a recent move to the Drumheller Continuing Care Facility where he passed away. Ewald was predeceased by his father Edward in 1992 and his mother Emilie in 1996. He is survived by sister Marie and Wes Simons of Cobourg, Ontario; sister Elsie Pentelchuk of Drumheller, sister Hilda Schwab of Saskatoon, Sask., brother Ken and Victoria Leonhardt of Drumheller, sister Betty and Vince Machacek of Crossfield and brother Robert and Dianne Leonhardt of Calgary. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 28, 2 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Drumheller. Cremation is being arranged by Courtney~Winters Funeral Home. Interment will take place at a later date at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.
