Besides the oil fields and the dinosaurs that have walked Drumheller hills for thousands of years. The Valley is also known to perform some of the best theatre around.
CANADIAN BADLANDS PASSION PLAY
Located in the natural surroundings of the Canadian Badlands,
navigating your way to the site is easy... Drive West on South Dinosaur
Trail(or Highway 10), follow the ski hill signs, and turn South into
the ski hill parking lot. The Passion Play Site is tucked in behind the
ski hill lodge. The Canadian Badlands Passion Play is a renowned and
remarkable work of the reenactment of the life of Jesus Christ. Set in
a magnificent natural amphitheater located in the scenic Badlands, the
terrain of hills and valleys, historical sets, as well as the costumes
and actors will transport the audience back in time to witness the
ministry, miracles, trials, and crucifixion of the Son of God.
ROSEBUD THEATRE
Finding the Rosebud Theatre will simply take you out 20 kilometres west
of Drumheller on Highway 9. Turn south on Highway 840 and proceed for
12 kilometres until you arrive at the quaint community of Rosebud, home
of the Rosebud Dinner Theatre. Currently playing at the Rosebud Opera
House is W.O.Mitchell’s The Kite until June 18. His own adaptation of
his novel about the oldest man in the world on the eve of his 117th
birthday. When a CBC camera crew shows up for an interview the
cantankerous daddy Sherry announces his death to all. This very funny
production reveals the life-force that surpasses over the years, and
the ongoing love from a grandson for his great granddad. John Lazarus’
Village of Idiots will be playing at the Opera House July 1 through
October 8.
Enjoy the humorous tale of Yosef a man who travels to the Russian village of Chelm and discovers that the rumors are true…it really is a village of idiots. Share the trials and tribulations as he builds a synagogue, falls in love and goes to war with a community whose logic defies prevailing reason. Visit the Studio Stage in Rosebud and the production of Salt Water Moon by David French. This play will take you back to 1926 on the front porch of a coastal home in the town of Coley’s Point in Newfoundland, where the lovely Mary Snow studies the evening sky though a telescope. Mary is interrupted by the unexpected appearance of Jacob Mercer, the boy she once had fallen in love with a year ago and had suddenly departed for Toronto without a goodbye. Jacob has returned to Coley’s Point in the hopes of winning back the affection that Mary once felt for him.
While in the Rosebud area, be sure to check out That's Crafty! and visit the barn with the big blue teapot. That's Crafty!, located on Highway 9, just 26 kilometres west of Drumheller and about an hour from Calgary city limits has been in business for 14 years and offers a wide array of handmade gifts and crafts. If you're tired from the trip relax in That's Crafty!'s tearoom which overlooks a beautiful prairie view. The tearoom offers a selection of lunches and desserts as well as being the home of the giant cinnamon bun. The tearoom has grown from two tables to now where it seats 50. That's Crafty!'s business hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturdays. That's Crafty! is open from March until Christmas shopping season in December.
