In a tradition that now spans over a decade, students from Greentree School, St. Anthony’s School and Morrin School were joined by Alberta Health Services and the Drumheller Dragons for their annual Knee Hockey Tournament. Greentree School hosted a full house of Grade 5 and 6 students who battled it out with stick and puck. While it is a lot of fun,  goal of the event is to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking and smokeless tobacco. Martin McSween, addictions counsellor for Alberta Health Services has organized the event since 2006.

    The St. Anthony’s Sabres boys and girls basketball teams played host to the 12th annual Sabres Invitational.
    The boys team were in transition this season, and have only had one practice with new coach Joey Browning. Despite this, they came out working hard and defeated Beiseker Friday afternoon in their first game with a score of 61-24.
    They went on to play Hanna in their second game, but this proved to be a tough match, with Sabres losing 73-39.
    In the final game versus Our Lady of the Snows from Canmore, the boys were strong and won 57-23.
 Coach Browning was happy with the team’s effort, especially after such a short time together.
    “They are some hard working kids, so I thought I would teach them what I know and help them get a little batter at basketball,” he said.
    It seems to have paid off with the second place finish.
    “They performed quite well,” he said adding they have as short bench. “They are pulling it together.”
    Riley Gaudet was named an MVP for the Sabres.
    On the girls side, the Sabres played well, they were within six points versus Beiseker in their first game and then fell in another close game to Duchess. In their final game versus Our Lady of the Snow, the Sabres fell by only one point 40-39.
    Coach Gavin Makse said his team was leading at point in every one of their games and had the ability to win but fell short.
    Megan Boland was named as one of the tournament MVPs.
