Everyone is a winner

Fun tourny

Drumheller RecTeam Hockey Club held their 21st Annual Hockey Fun Team Tournament at the Memorial Arena.  RecTeam Hockey’s  theme for the tournament was “Everyone is a Winner!” Their goal is to allow our youth to develop physical skills in a gradual and orderly manner.  Not everyone plays at the same rate and not everyone will achieve the same ability.  By having an opportunity to participate in a fun and non-threatening environment, it will allow our youth to build their self esteem and get more out of the sport.
Didsbury Trashers, Olds Grizzlys, Hanna Fillies, Rosemary Bandits and Drumheller Chinook teams all gathered  December 29 to enjoy the sport and feel the satisfaction of accomplishment.
These games were organized to promote skill development, sportsmanship, fair play, respect for teammates, coaches, the opposition, officials and spectators.
When the last game was played, everyone had received an equal opportunity to participate and an award memento.
All time keepers, score keepers, referees, linesmen, coaching staff and ticket sellers were all volunteers.  This tournament was one of four being played. There were 19 teams participating consisting of 260 players, ages 12-15.
Over 30 local sponsors supplied awards, keepsakes and  prizes.

Rock’em Sock’em tobacco-free hockey

kneehokey4In a tradition that now spans over a decade, students from Greentree School, St. Anthony’s School and Morrin School were joined by Alberta Health Services and the Drumheller Dragons for their annual Knee Hockey Tournament. Greentree School hosted a full house of Grade 5 and 6 students who battled it out with stick and puck. While it is a lot of fun,  goal of the event is to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking and smokeless tobacco. Martin McSween, addictions counsellor for Alberta Health Services has organized the event since 2006.
