DVSS athlete shines at provincials

A DVSS athlete proved her prowess at the provincial track meet.
Foote Field in Edmonton was the site of the 2016 Track and Field Provincials on June 3rd and 4th.  DVSS had one athlete who qualified in the 3000m race and 1500m race.
Kyra Koustrup, a Grade 12 student was one of the 1,100 student athletes from across Alberta who participated.
In the 3000m race on Friday, Koustrup improved her personal best by 40 seconds which resulted in a 5th place finish.
On Saturday Koustrup ran the 1500m race, once again improving her personal best by 15 seconds, this resulted in a 6th place finish.
The competition at this event was top notch and in both of Kyra’s races it was a fast paced run. There truly are gifted athletes who can “run like the wind” and it is incredible to be able to watch that in a person.
“I was so happy with how Kyra performed and represented Drumheller, giving her all and demonstrating sportsmanship by congratulating all participants,” said coach Dawn Sullivan. “It was a great way for Kyra to finish her high school athletic career!”

Titans alumni earn spot on Westshore Rebels junior football squad

Two former Drumheller Titans are on their way to Vancouver Island to play football.
Aden Enns, who just graduated from DVSS this year, and Eric Seiller, have been selected to play for the Westshore Rebels of the CJFL. For Enns, while he has only had limited exposure to the program, he feels like it is a good fit.
“I only went out there for tryouts, but everyone is super friendly and it is a really intense group of guys. It is just really exciting,” said Enns.
Enns had a goal set to play junior and he had offers from Calgary, Edmonton and Kamloops, before he set out for a tryout with Rebels. The great coaching staff, with national championship and NCAA experience, convinced him.
“I also wanted to get out of Alberta and start a new chapter, get away from home and start from scratch,” he said.
He has his eyes on continuing his football career.
“If I can get a scholarship, I would play college football, that is the end goal. I am not riding on that, because things do change, but if I do get the chance I would take advantage of that,” he said, adding he is able to gain experience on the field in junior while still maintaining college eligibility.
For Eric Seiller, he had been out of school for a year when Enns approached him to tryout. He is looking forward to the experience, but is realistic. He hopes to take the experience day by day, and see where it leads.
Practices began right away, and their first game is July 24 versus the Langley Rams.
A number of Drumheller Titans have been proving themselves at the junior football ranks. Alan Lister has been putting in time with the Calgary Colts and last season Travis Dietrich was selected as Defensive Lineman of the Year on the Valley Huskers in Chilliwack. Gage Berdahl also continued his football career with the Huskers.

DVSS, Drumheller Football team up on Project Play grant application

DVSS and the Drumheller Titans are hoping for a boost to improve their field and playing facility.
They have teamed up with the Town of Drumheller to apply for the Kraft Heinz Project Play $250,000 grant for recreation facility improvements.
One of the coaches of the Drumheller Terrapins, Heather Jones, worked on the application, and says the facility is in dire need of repairs.
“We have been fundraising for the field itself for the past year, and we are at about a quarter of what it would take to do the field alone,” said Jones.
If they are successful in the application, they would have the funds to resurface the field, as well as add new bleachers, washrooms, a tower for announcers and coaches to view the field, and a proper concession. They would also refurbish the running track.
Many of the upgrades would support the Drumheller Community Football program, which has been shaping young athletes since 1995. Today, they have bantam and senior teams and just two years ago, it added the Peewee Terrapins, a chance for Grade 5 and 6 students to learn the game before going into junior high.
In the team’s brief history, they have had great success that includes Tier IV provincial championships in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Alumni have gone on to play at the junior and university level.
Beyond Drumheller Community Football, the fireld is an important part of DVSS, and all the sports and community building programs it is involved in.
“The rugby team uses, it the school uses it, there is so much we could do with this money,” she said.
The deadline for the application was June 12. Currently, the contest is in the adjudicating phase and four finalists will be announced on July 8.
On July 25 and 26, the voting round will be held. The grand prize is $250,000, and the runner-ups will receive $20,000.
