DVSS and the Drumheller Titans are hoping for a boost to improve their field and playing facility.
They have teamed up with the Town of Drumheller to apply for the Kraft Heinz Project Play $250,000 grant for recreation facility improvements.
One of the coaches of the Drumheller Terrapins, Heather Jones, worked on the application, and says the facility is in dire need of repairs.
“We have been fundraising for the field itself for the past year, and we are at about a quarter of what it would take to do the field alone,” said Jones.
If they are successful in the application, they would have the funds to resurface the field, as well as add new bleachers, washrooms, a tower for announcers and coaches to view the field, and a proper concession. They would also refurbish the running track.
Many of the upgrades would support the Drumheller Community Football program, which has been shaping young athletes since 1995. Today, they have bantam and senior teams and just two years ago, it added the Peewee Terrapins, a chance for Grade 5 and 6 students to learn the game before going into junior high.
In the team’s brief history, they have had great success that includes Tier IV provincial championships in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Alumni have gone on to play at the junior and university level.
Beyond Drumheller Community Football, the fireld is an important part of DVSS, and all the sports and community building programs it is involved in.
“The rugby team uses, it the school uses it, there is so much we could do with this money,” she said.
The deadline for the application was June 12. Currently, the contest is in the adjudicating phase and four finalists will be announced on July 8.
On July 25 and 26, the voting round will be held. The grand prize is $250,000, and the runner-ups will receive $20,000.
