Hand Hills chuckwagon racer Colt Cosgrave captured his first Ponoka Stampede Championship on Sunday, July 3, taking home $50,000, a new GMC pickup truck, and the 2016 Ponoka championship crown.

Cosgrave won the dash for cash final heat at the Ponoka Stampede, one of the World Professional Chuckwagon Association’s most prestigious events on the pro tour, and his first championship win since Red Deer in 2006.

“It comes down to the horses and a little bit of luck. A couple guys hit some barrels and we stayed clean,” said Cosgrave.

In the championship heat, Cosgrave and outriders Chance Flad and Chad Cosgrave went penalty free in a 1:15.23 from barrel position two, beating out Codey McCurrach of Eckville, 31 one hundreths of a second behind Cosgrave.

He hopes his horses ran just as hard as they have all season in the upcoming Calgary Stampede WPCA competition which begins this Friday, July 8 until July 17.

“Calgary is the big one – it’s ten days, so if you can stay clean for ten days you got a real good shot at being there,” said Cosgrave. “You got to be fast and clean.”

Cosgrave placed second overall at the Ponoka Stampede last year. He placed 23 overall at the Calgary Stampede last year.

The Drumheller Hi-Way 9 Vipers U12 “C” Vipers rolled right through their double header against the Airdrie Aces on Sunday afternoon, and are looking to make a a run at provincials next month.

The Vipers crushed the Aces 20-8 in their first game of the series and had a tighter second game against Airdrie, but came out on top at 6-4.

“It should be a good run to provincials,” said coach Dale Telford. “They’re playing as a team, with good catching, fielding, and their batting keeps getting better.”

Pitching standouts are Calon, Heptonstall, and Wright, and the team is powered by some strong hitting by Boyko and Christensen.

The Airdrie Aces are a good caliber team and the Vipers’ double win over them this weekend provides proof that the girls will fare well in Softball Alberta provincials on July 15 to 17 in Castor.

This team is an amalgamation of some of the top players from both the Drumheller U12 Vipers and Comets in the “C” division.

Before heading to provincials, the team will be participating in a tournament in Trochu on July 10.

The Drumheller Hellraisers were victorious in their first home game.

The Hellraisers hosted the Rockyview Bruise Battalion on Saturday June 25 at the Drumheller Memorial Arena. Team member Kyra Reid was ecstatic to report that the Final score was 273 vs 176.

The team is travelling to Airdrie to rematch The Bruise Battalions on July 6 at 7pm.

Bench Coach Lorraine Enns-Seright said "Our team started in March 2015 so we are a little over a year old, and all of our members started with little experience. Our girls played the best that they have to date on Saturday. They really came together to execute all the plays and drills we have been practicing. They held strong walls to keep the opponents Jammers back and our Jammers pushed hard to collect as many points as possible."
