The Drumheller Dragons were able to pick up two of a possible four points when they hosted both Calgary teams at home; one holding strong to the first place spot in the Viterra AJHL south, while one that is still looking to pick up its second win of the season.
On Friday night the Dragons hosted the Calgary Canucks, who were sporting a 6-3-1 record. The Canucks went up late in the first period. The Dragons outshot the Canucks 14-7 in the second period and answered back 13 minutes in, when Brayden Nicholetts found the goal.
The Canucks opened the third period with four straight goals in the first 5:36 of the game. Joren Patenaude scored on the power play about nine minutes in, but it was too little too late as the Canucks won 5-2.
The Dragons were back in action on Saturday night when they took on the Calgary Mustangs. The Dragons outshot the Mustangs 37 to 29 as they cruised to a 6-2 win. Right away, the Dragons jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first period with goals from Evan Rochowiak, Nicholetts, Brett Campbell, Stefan Wood and Brady Risk before the Mustangs found the net.
The second period was scoreless. Seven minutes into the third period, Risk scored his second of the game. The Mustangs scored at the 12-minute mark, but that was as close as they could get.
Campbell had three points with a goal and two assists and Dane Dow has his first win in net.

The Drumheller Dragons came out of the gate strong on Tuesday, October 11, but a three-goal flurry by the Camrose Kodiaks in the third period dashed their hopes.

The Dragons were on the road to face the Kodiaks and had the jump off the puck drop.

Just three and half minute in Brady Risk opened the scoring. 10 minutes later, Jordan Taupert scored on the powerplay, and then at the 18-minute mark, Markus Boguslavsky put the Dragons up by three.

The Kodiaks opened the second period with a goal, but the Dragons answered back on the powerplay when Joren Patenaude found the net. The Kodiaks scored one more to end the period with the Dragons leading 4-2.

In the third, the Kodiaks outshot the Dragons 20-2 and went on to score three straight goals to win 5-4.

The Dragons are back on home ice this Saturday night to play the Fort McMurray Oil Barons and then on Sunday afternoon versus the Grand Prairie Storm.

Drumheller Bantam Titans win by landslide

The Bantam Titans travelled to Springbank to play a game Saturday. The Titans played strong with an expected win and didn’t disappoint  their fans, winning 44-0.
Head coach Paul Redmond said, “Connor Enns, our running back, is also the backup quarterback. I had him start the game for experience and it worked well. Enns scored five or six touchdowns. Being 6’2 already, he is a fairly dominant player.”
Redmond explained that the Bantam league has no restrictions except age and grade. Without weight restrictions this can make for a big difference in the size of athletes.
“We can see a student who is barely 80 lbs next to a student who is close to 300 lbs.” Redmond laughed.
The team recovered well from previous injuries and played with a full roster. Redmond said they look good going into next weekend’s game which is an exhibition game in Strathmore on Saturday, October 8 at 1 p.m.

Senior Titans mired in penalties versus Airdrie

The Titans were locked in a defensive battle with George McDougall of Airdrie, but came up short Wednesday night.
The Titans hosted the Mustangs under the lights and in what seems to be a curse for the team, they stumbled out on offense with two fumbles in the first half, found themselves behind the eight ball.
Coach Ken Fournier said the defense, while not stellar, held, and they were able to keep the Mustangs to just two touchdowns. The offense however, was only able to muster two points, and the one burden they carried was penalties.
The team was able to march the ball down the field on the ground and had some pass completions, but penalties kept marching them back. Fournier said penalties cost the team an estimated 130 yards.
“Our net offensive yards was probably less than 100, and it was all mental errors,” he said.
    The final score was 14-2.
The Titans hope to get back in the winning column this Saturday when they head to Pincher Creek.
“Pincher Creek hasn’t put up a lot of points this season, but they do play some opponents they face year in and year out, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they are a little bit of a snake in the weeds,” said Fournier.
