St. Anthony’s continues to deliver quality physical education for its students and was once again honoured for this effort.

The school was presented with the 2015-2016 Quality (daily) Physical Education Award. For its commitment to offering exceptional physical education to the school community, it received a letter of congratulations from one of the most famous former teachers in Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“This award recognizes the great success of your school’s physical education programming. As a former teacher and someone who enjoys a number of sports, I know how important it is to get students moving and to give them the knowledge required to make healthy choices that will last a lifetime,” he states in a letter.

“I would like to commend the staff, coaches and parents for supporting a program that provides opportunities for physical activity, emphasizes fun and fair play and encourages leadership and self-confidence.”

The award is presented by Physical and Health Education (PHE) Canada, which has the vision to supporting schools in the promotion of health

“This award is a recognition of your schools’ achievement of providing a quality/comprehensive Physical Education program that provides a foundation for the development of physical literacy; enabling students to live physically active and healthy lives,” stated PHE President Fran Harris in a letter. “Out of approximately 15,000 schools in Canada, close to 500 schools receive this award each year, truly making your school one of Canada’s leaders in physical education.”

For their effort, the school was presented with a banner that will be hung in the gymnasium.

DVSS athlete shines at provincials

A DVSS athlete proved her prowess at the provincial track meet.
Foote Field in Edmonton was the site of the 2016 Track and Field Provincials on June 3rd and 4th.  DVSS had one athlete who qualified in the 3000m race and 1500m race.
Kyra Koustrup, a Grade 12 student was one of the 1,100 student athletes from across Alberta who participated.
In the 3000m race on Friday, Koustrup improved her personal best by 40 seconds which resulted in a 5th place finish.
On Saturday Koustrup ran the 1500m race, once again improving her personal best by 15 seconds, this resulted in a 6th place finish.
The competition at this event was top notch and in both of Kyra’s races it was a fast paced run. There truly are gifted athletes who can “run like the wind” and it is incredible to be able to watch that in a person.
“I was so happy with how Kyra performed and represented Drumheller, giving her all and demonstrating sportsmanship by congratulating all participants,” said coach Dawn Sullivan. “It was a great way for Kyra to finish her high school athletic career!”

Titans alumni earn spot on Westshore Rebels junior football squad

Two former Drumheller Titans are on their way to Vancouver Island to play football.
Aden Enns, who just graduated from DVSS this year, and Eric Seiller, have been selected to play for the Westshore Rebels of the CJFL. For Enns, while he has only had limited exposure to the program, he feels like it is a good fit.
“I only went out there for tryouts, but everyone is super friendly and it is a really intense group of guys. It is just really exciting,” said Enns.
Enns had a goal set to play junior and he had offers from Calgary, Edmonton and Kamloops, before he set out for a tryout with Rebels. The great coaching staff, with national championship and NCAA experience, convinced him.
“I also wanted to get out of Alberta and start a new chapter, get away from home and start from scratch,” he said.
He has his eyes on continuing his football career.
“If I can get a scholarship, I would play college football, that is the end goal. I am not riding on that, because things do change, but if I do get the chance I would take advantage of that,” he said, adding he is able to gain experience on the field in junior while still maintaining college eligibility.
For Eric Seiller, he had been out of school for a year when Enns approached him to tryout. He is looking forward to the experience, but is realistic. He hopes to take the experience day by day, and see where it leads.
Practices began right away, and their first game is July 24 versus the Langley Rams.
A number of Drumheller Titans have been proving themselves at the junior football ranks. Alan Lister has been putting in time with the Calgary Colts and last season Travis Dietrich was selected as Defensive Lineman of the Year on the Valley Huskers in Chilliwack. Gage Berdahl also continued his football career with the Huskers.
