Dynos back on court

   Basketball is back and in full swing at DVSS with six teams ready to take to the court.
   The gym at the school has been chock full of aspiring hoopsters getting ready for the season.
   Athletic director Jeff Messom says they have just completed tryouts.
   “We saw lots of interest in the senior boys teams, our Grade 8/9 boys and Grade 7 girls teams,” he said.
   The Junior B Grade 7-8 girl team will be coached by Elesha Wright, the Junior B Grade 7/8 boys are coached by Ron Davies. The Grade 8/9 girls will be coached by Messom and Nicole Leggott, and Michael Lee coaches the Grade 8/9 boys.
   At the senior Level, Jennifer Raugust and Andy Neuman are back to coach the Senior Girls team, and Dyno alumni, Will Belliveau and James Fournier are coaching the senior boys.
   “All of our teams will be involved in various tournaments throughout the year either hosting or travelling,” said Messom. “Our school also continues to be a member of the Golden Hills Basketball League, providing the teams with additional games during the weeks from December to March.”
   The Junior A boy’s home opener is on December 8 versus Linden and the Junior A girl’s first home game is December 1 versus Trochu. The Junior B boy’s first home game is on December 1 versus Trochu, and the Junior B girl’s home opener is on December 8 versus Linden.
   The Senior boys’ season begins with a tournament in Acme on December 9 and 10, and their league home opener is on December 14 versus Acme.
   The Senior girls open the season with a home tournament on December 2 and 3.

DVSS Sr. Dynos finish off season in Three Hills

   Three Hills hosted zones on November 18 and 19 which marked the end of Volleyball season for the Sr. Dynos.
   The Drumheller Dynos played against teams from Calgary, Strathmore, Sundre, Didsbury and Three Hills. The Dynos won two out of five matches, one was their strongest plays, according to team captain Makenna Lutz.
   Lutz said, “The weekend was a great finish. We definitely had our highs and our lows but we played the best game of the season this past weekend against Prairie Christian Academy and took them to the third set.”
   For some of the athletes this will be their last tournament before graduating this year. Team captain Lutz and co-captain Nikki Thompson are among these.
   “It was definitely an emotional time for myself and Nikki Thompson as we said goodbye to everyone for the last time. But the season has been amazing, I think I can speak for us all when it comes to the friendships we’ve made with each other and always getting along and supporting one another. I’m very sad to be done for sure but I have so many memories I’m going to cherish forever with these girls!” Makenna Lutz said.

NGC Peewee Raptors top Airdrie at home

   Drumheller’s NGC Peewee Raptors are now 1-1 as they begin the regular season.
   The league is coming off realignment, and the Peewee Raptors went from Tier III to Tier II.
   The team was in Carstairs on Saturday, November 19 to take on the Rocky Mountain Athletic Association Renegades, but fell 6-3.
   Zachary Cawiezel was hot, scoring a hattrick and Cameron Schurner contributed an assist.
   The team regrouped on Sunday when they hosted Airdrie at the Drumheller Memorial Arena. It was a balanced attack as Tanner Moulton and Joel Howard led scoring with two goals each, Anderson Freilinger and Cawiezel each contributed a goal and an assist, Evan Montgomery had two assists and Hunter Dayton had one. They won 6-4.
   Coach Cam Batty is liking how the team is playing.
   “This year we are not putting too much focus on individual players but keeping the focus on playing as a team,” he said. “Team playing is everything and the team really started to display that during the game.”
   Next game up for the Peewee Raptors is Indus on the road this Saturday, November 26.
