The senior boys DCHS Dynos continued their march through the season with a tournament win.
Last weekend, the team in Claresholm was to play in the Willow Creek Composite High School Invitational Tournament.
The team overcame the adversity of injuries and illness to capture first place at the tourney.
On Friday night, January 8, the Dynos were up against the number one ranked team in 1A basketball, the Livingstone Sabres. Despite the Dynos being down five players due to illness, the team managed to grit out a 81-74 victory with a rotation of seven players.
Mitch Smith led the way with 33 points and 14 rebounds. Kyle Masson had 25 points and key baskets. Jesse Browning and Gavin Pittman were also strong off the glass.
This put the Dynos in the semi final against F.P Walshe from Fort McLeod. They marched to a 83-40 victory, putting them in the finals versus the home team, Willow Creek Composite Cobras.
The Dynos jumped out to a 14 point lead early in the contest, but the short bench, compounded by foul trouble, began to add up as key players sat most of the first half.
The Cobras were able to use their size advantage and fight back to take a three point lead. In the second half the Dynos again had to depend on its reserves as two of the starters fouled out, but they gritted it out and went on a late run to take a five point lead. In the end the Dynos came away with a 73 - 71 victory.
Tournament Game Stars were Kyle Masson, Daulton Smith, and Jesse Browning.
The tournament all star was Jesse Browning and tournament MVP was Mitch Smith.
