The Dragons extended their winning streak to seven games with a victory over Fort McMurray, but after a couple of losses, bounced back with a record-breaking game on Monday.
To recap the week, the Dragons hosted the Oil Barons on Tuesday, February 11. The Dragons dominated play in the first period, but it was Logan Peskett, in his ninth game as a Dragon, who scored his second of the season to carry a 1-0 lead out of the first period. Allen Sherpa put the Dragons up by two midway through the second period.
Kai Matthew opened the scoring in the third period, but the Oil Barons came back with two quick goals to make it a game. Aiden Connell fired back for the Dragons, creating a little space, and then Bradley Gallo’s 29th of the season came on an empty net with a minute and thirty-five seconds left. Dragons win 5-2.
On Valentine’s Day, the Dragons boarded the bus and headed to Camrose for a date with the Kodiaks. Camrose scored first, but Jase Johnstone evened it up on the powerplay to end the first period tied. Ellis Mieyette took the lead just 34 seconds into the second period to take the lead, but Camrose again evened it out. Gallo found the net to put the Dragons up 3-2 to end the second.
The Kodiaks tied it back up seven minutes into the third period and held on for overtime. An interference penalty cost the Dragons as the Kodiaks went on to a 4-3 overtime win.
Back on home ice on Saturday, February 15, the Dragons hosted the league-leading Canmore Eagles. The Eagles jumped out to an early two-goal lead after one period, but Sherpa put the Dragons on the scoreboard in the second. The Eagles scored two more before Nick Mclellan found the net for the Dragon. Mieyette then scored with a minute left, but it was too little too late as the Eagles went on to a 4-3 win.
The Dragons were back on the ice on Family Day, February 17, for a matinee versus the Olds Grizzlys. The Dragons were breathing fire and wore out two Olds goalies on their way to victory. Goals from Tristan Payne, Tate Yule Bradley Gallo, and two from Jase Johnstone had the Draognsup 5-1 after the first period. They kept up the pace in the second, with four goals to the Grizzlys' one. This time Will McLaughlin, Logan Peskett and Elis Mieyette found the net, and Johnstone contributed his third. In the final frame, Johnstone scored his fourth of the Game and Gallo his second as the Dragons routed the Grizzlys 11-2. The 11 goals tied a Dragons record, and it has only been done twice; once in 2010 versus the Drayton Valley Thunder, and then in 2018 versus the Brooks Bandits.
This weekend, the Dragons go back-to-back with the Grande Prairie Storm, with a Saturday evening match-up and then a Sunday matinee.
