The Drumheller Terrapins are winding down their season, but looking back it has been a strong season of learning and having fun.
They have also been very competitive on the field.
On Saturday afternoon, October 15, they took on the Red Deer Steelers, and though they fell 26-0, they played well defensively. The Terrapins fell behind 20-0 at the half but managed to hold Red Deer to just one touchdown in the second half.
“It is not that bad at all considering that Red Deer is a high scoring team, we held them pretty good,” said Coach Thomas Laffin.
He said the Terrapins have struggled with size this season, and last Saturday that was again the case.
“We are a very young team with seven Grade 7 players going up against teams with more Grade 7s and more size than us,” he explains. “We moved the ball almost 170 yards, it was just the turnovers was killing us.”
Another highlight was Ben Messom, who now holds the record for most interceptions in one game and also in a season.
While the team has been short on wins, it has been competitive.
“When you look at the stat lines with points for and against we look really good,” he said. “The game play is better. The guys have developed very well.”
The Terrapins have one more regular season game this Saturday versus Innisfail, and then the postseason begins. The next weekend the team has a bye and then on November 5, they are back in the thick of it.
He foresees the team playing in the C Championship and he says they have a good opportunity to bring home that trophy on November 5.
