Hussar keeping community spirit alive through recreation

The Hussar Arena is home to various recreational programs including: figure skating, minor hockey, power skating and ringette.

It is programs such as these that bring the community together in a fun organized way.

“I think these programs keep the community spirit strong. If we can keep these recreational programs going it gives the kids a chance to be active and interact in a community setting,” said Sandum who is the president of both the Hussar Figure Skating Club and Minor Hockey.

The StarSkate and Can
Skate programs, sanctioned under Skate Canada will be offered again this year. These are the figure skating and learn-to-skate programs designed to teach the fundamentals of both recreational and figure skating.

“Our coach again for this year is Sam Miller. The programs will run either Monday or Tuesday nights, depending on the registration numbers,” said Sandum.

PowerSkate will be offered the same evenings with Miller also coaching the program.  Classes will run for 16 weeks.

Minor Hockey is also gearing up to start the season.

“We’re very lucky to have our arena. We get fantastic ice times. We don’t have such things like Tykes practicing at 7 a.m. That never happens in Hussar, we have prime ice for our local teams,” said Sandum.

Hussar Arena is hoping to offer, to anyone who is interested, Tyke, Novice, Atom, and Pee Wee programs.

A novice-aged ringette team is also set to form in Hussar.

“We are looking forward to having a team. We started the program last year to see what the interest level was and we did end up with a team that will carry on,” said Sandum.

She said their fees are a lot less in comparison to the bigger centers for the amount of ice time skaters and players receive.

As for the arena itself, Sandum said the $6 million facility has four dressing rooms, equipped with showers and facilities, and the arena kitchen is leased out every year. She said they have an extremely varied menu, and that they “don’t just eat burgers and fries.”

“Anyone wanting to come and be a part of our organization we welcome with open arms.”

Registration takes place at the Hussar Arena on Tuesday, September 4 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. For any questions regarding programs, fees, and schedules contact CoreyAnne Sandum at(403) 787-2410 or visit www.hussararena.ca.
