Zone Two strikes bronze at Summer Games

Area baseball players went to the Alberta Summer Games and came home with bronze medals.

Rylie Smith of Trochu, Dane Steen of Carbon, Quentin Kopjar of Rowley, Brett Stockwood of Three Hills, Bennett Kary of Trochu, Carson Boyd of Carbon and Cody Thompson of Drumheller are members of the Acme Red Sox Bantam Baseball team.

However last week they were also members of the Zone 2 Team playing at the Alberta Summer Games in Lethbridge.  After some exciting games the team came home with a third place finish.

The Zone 2 Team was tied for first in their pool coming out of round robin, but was seeded second because of total runs. They fought their way to the bronze medal match versus Zone 6 of Edmonton and won 8-4.

“It was crazy exciting,” said Jolynn Kopjar. “The coach said ‘it was like we were MLB players,’ the crowd was so loud, so it was really exciting for them.”

While the Games have come to an end, the Red Sox are still in action. They are heading to St. Albert this coming weekend to play in the Tier 1 Provincial tournament.
