AIKINS, Erma Marcella
(nee Cavadini)

Now I lay me down to sleep...

Erma Marcella Aikins nee Cavadini, beloved wife and mother, age 74, passed away unexpectedly but gently on March 25, 2011, at her home in Smithers, BC. Erma is survived by her lifetime sweetheart, Howard, children Nona, Norma Jean and Howie and their respective families, as well as brothers Randolph & Carl and families. Erma was predeceased by her father Antonio, mother Catherine, and brother Joseph. Erma was born July 4, 1936, in Wayne, Alberta, and married to Howard Arthur Aikins I in Calgary, AB, in 1953. Soon after their marriage they relocated to the interior of BC. where they lived for some time in Wells and began raising their family. Moves saw them for a short time in Terrace before settling in Smithers in 1970. Erma excelled in her role as wife and mother. And not only was Erma Howie’s partner in a successful marriage but also in more than one entreprenurial venture they undertook. The best known of these was the popular Dog ‘N’ Suds Drive-in restaurant in Smithers which they built and operated together during the 1970’s. She was the friendly wave from inside that noted you were on the lot and had your order ready almost as soon as you were parked. From 1979 to 1996 Erma was the dedicated, smiling lady with the friendly face and voice that greeted you at the front desk of Pacific Northern Gas in Smithers. She stepped away from regular work in 1996 and moved out to rural Smithers where she and Howie enjoyed their retirement together at Club Moose.Erma enjoyed many activities. To mention a few, gardening, cooking and canning, camping, berry picking but most of all just doing anything that made people feel welcome whenever they visited her home. Whether you came just for coffee or to spend a day or two, she treated you royally and usually you did not leave her home empty handed. Erma enjoyed making people feel special. Just a few of the words family and friends have offered to describe Erma include Generous, Gentle, Loving, Compassionate, Kind, Welcoming, Helpful, Tender, Giving, Dedicated, Light-hearted, Cheerful, Creative, Honest, Happy, Efficient. Erma’s life positively touched the lives of many others. Erma was the epitome of a dedicated wife and mother and will remain forever in the many hearts of those who respected and loved her dearly. Respecting Erma’s wishes, she was quietly cremated and no formal service will be held. Memorial donations in her honor may be made to: Community Cancer Care Services, BV District Hospital, 3950 - 8th Avenue, Smithers, BC., V0J 2N0
