EDWARDS, Craig Wilfred

Craig Edwards, beloved husband of Clara Edwards of Calgary, passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2010 at the age of 83 years. Craig was born in Drumheller, Alberta, the sixth of eight children born to Bill and Elvena Edwards. He was raised near the Horseshoe Canyon and received his primary schooling in one-room schools, often attending on horseback. Following high school, he attended the U of A, graduating with a degree in Agricultural Economics. On a post graduation vacation in Acapulco he met and fell in love with Clara Fuchs. They married in Mexico in 1954, and farmed near Drumheller on the Pope Lease. Hanna became their home in 1974, followed by Olds in 1978 and Calgary in 2002. Craig lived his life with integrity, and will be lovingly remembered for his kindness, good humour and quick wit. He loved and protected his family, encouraging and teaching sport and driving many miles to little league, minor hockey, skiing and school athletics. He was an avid horseman, poet and storyteller, with many of his tales covering his childhood episodes in the saddle on his favourite horses. He was the delight of many of his nephews who visited the farm in their youth. He was a good friend to many in all the places he lived. In addition to various farming heroics, he helped establish the Drumheller Ski Club and worked with the Kiwanis in Olds. His best friends will remember him working by their side. To his children he was as big as the heroes in Lochinvar, The Ballad of East and West and Horatio At the Bridge, which he used to recite while driving us through the Badlands. His happiest day was the day he married Mom. We’ll miss him. Besides his loving wife Clara, Craig is survived by his children, Bill, Richard (Elena), and Lisa, and by his seven grandchildren: Amanda, Ashley, Courtney, Bradley, Madison, Jake and Luke. He is also survived by siblings John, Jim, Shirley and Phyllis. He was predeceased by his siblings Evelyn and Gladys. A Private Family Gathering was held.
