CRUIKSHANK, Gordon Paul
May 14, 1931 - April 18, 2010
Gordon Paul Cruikshank died April 18, 2010 in Camrose, Alberta at the age of 78 years. He was born May 14, 1931 in Hanna, Alberta to parents Gordon and Tilda Cruikshank. He attended elementary school in the Lone Butte Area and high school in Hanna. Gordon married Marlene Quaschnick December 17, 1953 on Marlene’s parent’s 25th wedding anniversary. They raised five girls, Marilyn, Jean, Sheila, Bev and Karen. He loved his life with his girls. He always said he really had 6 girls. The story goes that one of the girls worked as two, or maybe the sixth girl was mom. We asked Dad once if he ever regretted that he only had girls. His reply was emphatically no! He said girls worked harder and were a lot easier on equipment. One of our fond memories of Dad is when in the spring he would take us out across the slough in the hay wagon to break the ice. He would often look back at us and ask “are you scared yet”? He also attempted to get us wet. Dad loved playing with his grandkids and enjoyed watching them taking part in their sports. He was a big part of their lives and was a wonderful grandpa. Sports were one of Dad’s passions. We were raised with Hockey Night in Canada with Foster Hewitt. He also loved sitting around the big kitchen table with family and friends telling stories. In fact he still carried some of his favorite stories that he found in the paper in his wallet. He loved the land, especially growing grain, harvesting, haying and operating the combine. Another fond memory of Dad is when we would take coffee and cookies out to him while he was haying. He would always take a break and we got to dip our cookies in his coffee. When Dad retired he and mom enjoyed traveling around to different casinos trying out their luck with the machines. Dad leaves to mourn his passing his children, Marilyn (Doug) Sallows , Jean (Doug) Lamson, Sheila (Don) Veno, Bev Bickley and Karen Sheehan (Mike) and families, his brothers Bob (Mary), Norris and sister Mariane. His wife Marlene, parents Tilda and Gordon, brother Russell and sister Doris predeceased him. We miss you Dad. A family private Graveside service was held April 21, 2010 at the Lone Butte Cemetery with Rev Lyn Workman officiating.Cathy Watts of Heartland Funeral Services Ltd was entrusted with arrangements.
