EthelMoar

MOAR, Ethel Elena (nee Shaw, Magee)

September 3, 1920 - June 14, 2016

Mom’s journey of life began on September 3, 1920. Mom was born on the farm 5 miles south east of Drumheller and lived her 95 years in Drumheller, which she absolutely loved. She passed away on June 14, 2016. She was predeceased by her first husband, Arnold, her second husband Stewart and her seven brothers and sisters. Survived by her son, Raymond (Joan), daughter Sharon (Gerry), 5 grandchildren, Jill-Marie (Cam), Debbie (Al), Colleen (Craig), Louise (Greg), Sheldon (Carol) and 5 great grandchildren, Alex, Hunter, Rylan, Jordan and Jared. She had an active and rewarding life; she worked as a housekeeper in her early years, at the Diana Café and Anderson Drug Store where she received the “Special Service Award” and the “Citizen of the Year Award” in 1975. She served as an alderwoman for the City of Drumheller for two three year terms in the late 70’s. While in office her greatest achievements were; to establish the Library, the Day Care Center, the Civic Center and the Senior Citizen Center. Ethel was president of the Pioneer Trail Society, an Honoured Royal Lady, and member of the IODE, where she held the position of “Regent of Lady Willingdon”. She was a member of the St Magloire’s Anglican Church in Drumheller and attended the Presbyterian Church in Orkney. She loved living on the farm, harvesting was her favourite time of year when the men were busy in the fields and she could help by cooking for them. As a young girl she drove a team of horses to pick up the bundles of oats and wheat to take them to the threshing machine. She loved gardening and the outdoors, particularly collecting fossils and dinosaur bones. Mom continued to play crib during her illness and loved beating everyone. Our sincere thanks to Doctor Thlape, the nurses on the Acute Care ward and the Staff at Sunshine Lodge. A special thank you to the Moar family, especially to Wanda, John, Teanna, Grayson and Alice for their ongoing support and love for our Mom and family. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, June 24, 2016, at 11:00 A.M. at the Hillview Lodge (696-6 Ave. East, Drumheller). In lieu of flowers Ethel would appreciate donations to The Drumheller Area Health Foundation, 315-9 St. NW, Drumheller, AB, TOJ 0Y1 in memory of Ethel Moar. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes are in care of the arrangements.
