Fate of Drumheller Curling Club on brighter course

IMG 0098

The future of the Drumheller Curling Club looks a little brighter following a meeting on Thursday, April 7 to create a dialogue between the club’s executive board and members, members of the public, along with representatives from the Town of Drumheller and Curling Alberta.
On March 9 the club announced its current location would no longer be available as of June 30 due to significant repairs and updates required to bring the building up to code amid health and safety concerns.
“It was a productive meeting where, at the end, we stated that if there was a desire to continue to move forward, we all needed to work together,” shares Drumheller Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Darryl Drohomerski.
One way the Town is working to help the club is through “some minor repairs” to the existing rink facility to further extend its life. Initial estimates to complete all the repairs to the facility were around $1 million, though this cost could increase if additional work was identified once repairs began; this amount did not include any aesthetic or ice updates.
However, during this time, CAO Drohomerski notes the Drumheller Curling Club will need to make “significant progress” in their fundraising efforts toward building a new facility.
The existing facility was originally built in the 1950s, and the topic of a new rink has been in discussion for several years between the club and the Town.
Feasibility reports on both the club and facility were brought to council in 2018, along with designs for a new, fully-accessible rink estimated at between $5.6 million and $8.4 million.
For now, the club is looking forward to being able to have another season in the fall and begin working toward raising the necessary funds to help build a new facility.

Drumheller students give back to community with fundraisers

Greentree Kilo 2022

Students from the valley’s three schools recently participated in fundraising activities to help support the Drumheller Salvation Army food bank, and the Drumheller Valley Secondary School (DVSS) 2022 grad class was also able to hold its first cake auction fundraiser in two years.
The Kilo of Kindness food drive ran between March 1 and April 5, with students collecting non-perishable food items and cash donations alike for the Salvation Army food bank. A total of 806.25 pounds of food was collected between the three schools. DVSS students collected 349.35 pounds, St. Anthony’s students collected 249 pounds, and Greentree School students collected a total of 207.90 pounds. Grade 6 Greentree Elementary students were on hand to help with handing over the donated food to the Salvation Army. At the hand-off were (l-r) Raelynn, Salvation ArmyMajor Laura Burrell, Aydyn, Kevin, Skyler, and Salvation Army Family Services coordinator Amanda Courtenay.

CakeFundraiser

Raising money for the DVSS 2022 grad class was a “piece of cake” at the annual cake auction fundraiser. A total of 50 confectionary treats were up for auction, and bidding was fast paced and competitive. One cake saw the most competition, with staff and students running bids from one side to the other, and was auctioned off for $545. This is the first cake auction the school has been able to hold in two years, and it has been their highest cake fundraiser ever, raising a total of $3,471 for the 2022 grad class. DVSS grad committee members (l-r) Tori James, Megan Smith, Rhylan Castonguay, Alana Mackey, Jesse Paarup, and Nathan Dobell pose with one of the 50 confectionary items that were up for auction.

Triple Crown series event coming to DORVA

2022 Triple Crown

After two attempts, the Drumheller Off-Road Vehicle Association (DORVA) will be hosting a premier Canadian motocross event.
On June 11 and 12, DORVA will be hosting the second event of the 2022 MX Triple Crown Series.
The Triple Crown is a point series where riders compete in Arenacross, Motocross, and Supercross events. The Drumheller event will be a motocross event. The amateur races will be on June 11 and the pro series goes on June 12.
“Over the year you will get points for the Arenacross tour, points for the Motocross tour, and points for the Supercross tour. At the end of the year whoever wins the most points for all three disciplines wins the Triple Crown,” explains Brad Peake of DORVA. “One thing about it is there are different abilities and different styles, but the tracks are the same for everyone. That’s the one equalizing factor, it comes down to who is better at all three different types. But in order to win it, you have to have the ability to be at all three.”
The events get wide viewership, where it will be broadcast live and in re-airing on FOX Sports as well as replays on REV TV. It will also be streamed live on Ryde TV.
“There have been a few of the top Canadians spending their winter in the United States in the AMA Supercross and racing in some of the outdoor series there to keep brushed up, and then come up here and put on a good show,” he said.
DORVA has been a sponsor and supporter of rider Keylan Meston who competes in the series.
“That has been a very long-standing relationship. Keylan has been an ambassador of the sport and a very good ambassador for DORVA MX,” Peake said. “He helped connect all the pieces between Drumheller, the series promoter, and the riders themselves, he helped spread it around the country.”
Peake says there are opportunities for local community groups to maybe raise funds for themselves through helping with the event. This could be event support, to parking. To learn more check out DORVAMX.com, check out their Facebook, or email dorvateam@hotmail.com.
