Pickleballers celebrate National Day

On Saturday, August 13, a dedicated group of athletes celebrated National Pickleball Day. Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports, and in Drumheller, it has picked up an avid participant group, with some competing provincially. Last Saturday, they gathered at the courts at DVSS for their morning games and shared in friendly competition as well as some sweet snacks.


Inmate sentenced for hot oil attack

An inmate at the Drumheller Institution was sentenced for an attack that left another inmate with burns.
Leroy Redwood appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, August 5. He pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon following an attack on another inmate.
The court heard a conflict had developed with another inmate. Redwood, along with three other inmates went to the victim’s cell. Mr. Redwood was seen in surveillance footage to have thrown hot oil on the victim.
The victim escaped, and the footage showed Redwood making stabbing motions, although there is no evidence any of these attempts connected.
The victim received stab wounds and burns from the hot oil. The victim did not make any statements, and the charges were based on what was seen in the video evidence.
Redwood was sentenced to 90 days consecutive to his current sentence. He was also given a firearms prohibition and a DNA sample was ordered.

Standard celebrates centennial

Village of Standard residents got together on Saturday, August 13 to celebrate the village’s centennial. The day was filled with plenty of activities for all ages to enjoy.

A group of children line up for the old-time egg spoon race; after the race, participants were given cards for a scavenger hunt where they searched for 100 mischievous creatures from Danish mythology called Nisse men.

Along with games and activities for children, there were also activities for adults to enjoy, including a threshing demonstration of the centennial barley field.

The Irricana Lions catered a roast beef dinner on Saturday evening to over 600 guests at the Standard Rosebud Arena. Live music filled the night with performances by Aaron Krabsen and the Cat Country Band and Drew Gregory, and celebrations wrapped up Saturday night with a fireworks display.
