Inmate sentenced for hot oil attack

Copy of court

An inmate at the Drumheller Institution was sentenced for an attack that left another inmate with burns.
Leroy Redwood appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, August 5. He pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon following an attack on another inmate.
The court heard a conflict had developed with another inmate. Redwood, along with three other inmates went to the victim’s cell. Mr. Redwood was seen in surveillance footage to have thrown hot oil on the victim.
The victim escaped, and the footage showed Redwood making stabbing motions, although there is no evidence any of these attempts connected.
The victim received stab wounds and burns from the hot oil. The victim did not make any statements, and the charges were based on what was seen in the video evidence.
Redwood was sentenced to 90 days consecutive to his current sentence. He was also given a firearms prohibition and a DNA sample was ordered.
