Raptor Ridge Resort undergoes geotechnical review

RaptorRidgeResort

A geotechnical review of Raptor Ridge RV Resort site uncovered a minor concern regarding the location of an underground water pipeline and helped determine the stability of the proposed development site.
The report was presented during the regular Starland County council meeting on Wednesday, October 14 by Municipal Services manager Glen Riep.
Raptor Ridge Resort project manager Bob Doornenbal told the Mail, “We did a full geotechnical study on the property, and through this process were able to locate the waterline which intersects the middle of the development.”
The review revealed a section of waterline crossing the property was “not on the registered plan.” There is also a “lack of working tracer wire” according to the report; tracer wire is used to mark the location of underground utilities, such as water and gas pipelines.
Without working tracer wire, the pipeline will need to be daylighted, or manually exposed.
The study also showed “no issues with site stability” for the development site.
“This means our required setbacks from the escarpment will still coincide with not being able to see the development from the valley,” Doornenbal added.
Raptor Ridge Resort was proposed to Drumheller council in January of this year, with an open-house hosted in February. According to Doornenbal, they are in the process of preparing a development permit and “securing all the information and studies” required by all government and planning entities, including both the Town of Drumheller and Starland County.
Phase 1 of the development will include 97 titled RV sites overlooking the Red Deer River, Drumheller Valley, and the surrounding Badlands. Each site can be personalized and buyers are granted year-round access to their RVs and trailers, as well as the resort’s common amenities.

Fireworks Saturday for Diwali

Even in the age of COVID-19 restrictions, Drumheller is getting the opportunity to celebrate Diwali.
This year they are plans for a celebration on November 14. The Festival of Lights is an Indian holiday that holds significance for a number of different cultures and religions.
“Diwali is about the Festival of Lights. It’s about coming together as a family and as a community. It’s about resilience and the victory of light over darkness. During these dark times, let’s light up the sky and remember we still shine bright,” said Veronique Ram.
Drs. Rithesh and Veronique Ram, since 2018, have hosted an evening at the Drumheller Legion that included food and fun. Typically about 100- 150 attended these celebrations.
Because of COVID-19, they have decided to hosts a few events, including sponsoring the showing of a Hindi movie and then a fireworks display. They have received some support from a Heritage Arts and Culture grant from the Town of Drumheller and support for having the fireworks.
“In lieu of our annual Diwali dinner, we wanted to add another community event to keep up the community spirit in a COVID safe way,” Dr. Rithesh Ram.
The movie will be at the Napier Theatre at 1 p.m. . There will be East Indian sweets and dry snacks, all individually packaged for everyone who attends. There is limited attendance of 100.
At 7 p.m., there will be fireworks best viewed at Rotary Park. They are accepting donations of non-perishable food items for The Salvation Army Foodbank.

Clothing drive helps local women in need

Ladies Clothing Drive

The Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce held their ninth annual Women in Business Mixer on Thursday, October 22, adding a charitable component this year with a clothing drive to collect new and gently used ladies’ office wear.
The Salvation Army will help distribute the clothes and any woman in need of office-appropriate clothing, whether to obtain a job or attend interviews, can make an appointment with family services coordinator Amanda Courtenay with the Salvation Army. These items are kept separate from sale items in the thrift store, and an appointment is required.
