Witnesses subdue robbery suspect

Drumheller RCMP have one man in custody and are searching for a second after witnesses at Yavis Family Restaurant stopped and restrained one of the alleged culprits in an attempted robbery.
Police were on scene shortly before 2 p.m. on Monday, October 18, at the restaurant in downtown Drumheller. It is alleged that two men entered the restaurant wearing disguises. One of the men brandished a weapon in an attempt to rob the business. One of the employees of the restaurant was assaulted.
The culprits were not successful in their robbery attempt, and when they fled on foot, a witness was able to tackle and stop one of the culprits. Bystanders helped to subdue him until police arrived and took him into custody.
Staff Sargeant Ed Bourque says while people did intervene in this case, police caution the public to be safe.
“Obviously, we don’t encourage people to do that, and obviously, if someone is demanding and has a weapon, we don’t encourage people to refuse. But people will do things in the heat of the moment, and thank goodness we didn’t have anyone seriously injured,” said Bourque.
As the charges have yet to be sworn, the person arrested has not been identified.
Police are actively seeking the second suspect. He was wearing a Halloween mask and dark clothing with socks on his hands.
Police are asking anyone with knowledge of this incident to contact the Drumheller RCMP at 403-823-2630. If you want to remain anonymous, you can contact crime stoppers by phone at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), by internet at www.tipsubmit.com, or by SMS (www.crimestoppers.ab.ca for instructions).

Rotary Radio Auction, one night for a good cause

Although the Rotary Radio Auction was unable to go ahead last year, the annual event will be back on Thursday, October 28.
This year, the Badlands Historical Centre, just north of the post office, will be the venue for the radio auction, and the event will also move to one night only.
“This is the very first year we’re going to one night only, usually it’s a two night affair,” says event chairperson Linda Fisher. “We’re just not certain how the pandemic might affect everything.”
Despite the uncertainty, Fisher says the response from the business community has been fantastic.
The radio auction has been a regular occurrence in the Drumheller Valley since the early 1960s when it first started.
She explains businesses in the community donate items for the auction, and the proceeds are 100 per cent put back into the community through Rotary projects. One of these projects was the installation of new chairs at the Drumheller Health Centre, which was recently completed.
She notes the Rotary will be celebrating 100 years in Drumheller in 2024, and some of the proceeds from the radio auction may go towards the celebration, though this has not yet been decided.
Fisher welcomes the public to come to the Badlands Historical Centre, downtown Drumheller, north of the Post Office, on Wednesday, October 27 and Thursday, October 28 between noon and 4 p.m. to check out the items and pre-bid; the auction will be held live on Radio 910 and bids can be placed live at the Historical Centre as well.
“We will be following Alberta Health regulations. Proof of vaccination, proof of medical excemption or a negative, private Covid-19 test will be required to enter the facility along with wearing a mask,” said Fisher.
For any businesses who would like to make a donation, contact Linda at jlfisher@telusplanet.net or at 403-823-5441.

Eight firefighters from the Drumheller, East Coulee, and Rosedale halls took on the High Rise Challenge to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy and climb the old ski hill in full gear on Thursday, October 7. The team initially planned to climb the old ski hill twice, however, they were only able to safely complete the climb once before it got too dark. They are the only team registered in the Alberta/Northwest Territories region of the challenge, and set an initial fundraising goal of $1,500. As of Tuesday, October 12 they had raised a total of $2,710.
