Stuff the Bus returns

One thing that Drumheller does well is come together for those most in need in the community.

This is the case once again as Stuff the Bus continues into another year.

Stuff the Bus helps the Salvation Army Food Bank replenish its shelves mid way through the year. The community pitches in to fill a yellow school bus with groceries needed to keep the food bank running for those in need.

“Everybody remembers at Christmas time, but after spring and summer, the shelves are empty again, so it is a kick start,” said food drive organizer Shannon Wade. “This time of year there is not too much left.”

Stuff the Bus is slated for Thursday, August 27, at the ATB Financial parking lot.

It is an opportune time too for the Salvation Army especially with the beginning of the school year right around the corner. Wade says one area they focus on is foods that can be packed into school lunches for youngsters.

“They will gladly take anything, but we are trying to get things for kids’ lunches and breakfasts, so they get a good start every day,” said Wade. “Things like cereal, peanut butter, granola bars and fruit snacks would be great.”

Encana continues to support the Stuff the Bus efforts and will be donating  $2 for each pound of food donated, or matches cash donations dollar for dollar up to $10,000.

The event is supported by volunteers form many groups including ATB Financial. First Student Canada supplies the bus and the Salvation Army’s crew of volunteers come out each year. The Salvation Army Mascot will also make an appearance.

“Whatever anyone can do is greatly appreciated. Come on down and contribute however you can,” said Wade.

The weather was perfect over the Heritage long weekend (August 1-3) and the riders made the most of it when the Drumheller Off Road Vehicle Association (DORVA) hosted the MX Alberta Motorsports Association Championship series.

The event took place near the stampede grounds and there were about 260 entries into the race.

Casey Christensen, with DORVA said it was an “excellent weekend. There was lots of hot weather and things went really well.”

DORVA, which is celebrating its 25th year, brought a band from Airdrie who set up a stage and performed on Saturday night as part of the festivities.

“It was a great event. Drumheller is classified as one of the most favourite tracks in Alberta actually for a lot of riders. (It is) because of the uniqueness and the organization and the landscape and the (natural flowing) topography of the facility and of the track layout,” Christensen told the mail

He mentioned that the closeness to town is a huge plus for Drumheller as well.

“A lot of motor crossers that come to our event really enjoy coming and they stay here and start their summer holidays after racing,” he said.

Christensen said the youngest racer category saw entries from four to six years old and the vet junior and vet master classes had entries of 40 years and older.

Starland keeps Ryan Savary Fishing Derby alive

An iconic event that has helped keep the memory of a young man killed in an automobile accident more than two decades ago, is carrying on.

The Ryan Savary Memorial Fishing Derby began in 1994 by Savary’s friends Greg St. Laurent.  Ryan’s sister and his father Alex each took turns organizing the event.

Last summer Alex announced that the 2014 derby would be the last. However, with popularity of the event, Starland County has decided to step in to keep the Derby at Michichi alive.

‘Council approved it at their last meeting,” said Shirley Bremer of Starland. “The Savary family had decided to end it, but Frank Barron our caretaker at Michichi was interested in keeping it going. The county thought it is a good thing, it’s a good use of our campground and people look forward to it, so the county went ahead.”

The county has set a budget for organizing it and for prizes.

The 21st annual derby goes this Saturday August 22 at Michichi Reservoir from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entries are accepted until 11 a.m. There are prizes in the adult, youth and children’s events as well as draw prizes. There is special event with a prize for the catch closest to Ryan’s biggest catch at Michichi Reservoir; one pound, two ounces.

For more information on the event, contact Frank Barron at 403-321-1048.
