Stuff the Bus returns

One thing that Drumheller does well is come together for those most in need in the community.

This is the case once again as Stuff the Bus continues into another year.

Stuff the Bus helps the Salvation Army Food Bank replenish its shelves mid way through the year. The community pitches in to fill a yellow school bus with groceries needed to keep the food bank running for those in need.

“Everybody remembers at Christmas time, but after spring and summer, the shelves are empty again, so it is a kick start,” said food drive organizer Shannon Wade. “This time of year there is not too much left.”

Stuff the Bus is slated for Thursday, August 27, at the ATB Financial parking lot.

It is an opportune time too for the Salvation Army especially with the beginning of the school year right around the corner. Wade says one area they focus on is foods that can be packed into school lunches for youngsters.

“They will gladly take anything, but we are trying to get things for kids’ lunches and breakfasts, so they get a good start every day,” said Wade. “Things like cereal, peanut butter, granola bars and fruit snacks would be great.”

Encana continues to support the Stuff the Bus efforts and will be donating  $2 for each pound of food donated, or matches cash donations dollar for dollar up to $10,000.

The event is supported by volunteers form many groups including ATB Financial. First Student Canada supplies the bus and the Salvation Army’s crew of volunteers come out each year. The Salvation Army Mascot will also make an appearance.

“Whatever anyone can do is greatly appreciated. Come on down and contribute however you can,” said Wade.
