Facility on track for late August opening

The Badlands Community Facility construction is continuing on schedule to be complete at the end of August, with bookings already made for the banquet facility at the beginning of November.

Due to prolonged winter weather, construction was delayed a month from its previous completion date.
“The exciting part is seeing it being built, as the facility starts to get closed in you lose the sense of things happening, but there is quite a bit happening inside,” says the facility’s steering committee co-chair Hansine Kostelecky.
Equipment and furnishing decisions are being made now, steel girders have been put in place for the second level, suspension for the track is in, and smaller details like ordering equipment and ensuring the sports courts have been dealt with.
“We’re very firm with being able to open to take those bookings on the first of November,” said Kostelecky, who added there hasn’t been problems with the construction company. “It looks like a facility, now.”
Membership fees and cardholder fees are being discussed, and Kostelecky says they should be available shortly once council approves those numbers.
Currently, the committee is reviewing their options in respect to grant money now that the Conservative government has been elected. “Every time there’s a new government, they change the grant program,” said Kostelecky.
She adds a second ice surface and curling rink will be included in the second phase of the project, with fundraising continuing for it after phase one opens.
“I can't say there are any major hurdles – it’s on budget and essentially on time,” she said. “It’s something that’s going to be fantastic for this town.”
