Slave Lake fire relief continues to pour in

A second collection of relief items for evacuees of the Slave Lake fires is being gathered at both Hanna and Drumheller IGAs to be shipped off to those who lost their homes.

After the successful bus load of essential goods left Drumheller last Thursday, three more pallets have been filled at the Drumheller IGA, to be tentatively sent Thursday morning. Organizers say they may wait until next week to ship even more items.
“The response has been really great,” says Hanna resident Kyla Bates, who organized the drop-off locations in Hanna. “People have been giving thought into the stuff they’ve donated so far.”
Hanna previously did not have a place to donate goods.
Fifteen branches of Freson Bros. IGA are also collecting donated Smart Shopper coupons in the aim to convert them into $20,000 for evacuees of the fire. The blaze broke out last Saturday and destroyed 40 per cent of the northern Alberta town.
“The response has been overwhelming,” said Drumheller IGA manager Darryl Jacques.
They are accepting toiletries, gently used and new clothing, small household appliances, food, toys, diapers. “Anything that will fit in a box,” said Bates.
Hi-Way 9 Express Ltd. will be shipping items from Hanna to Drumheller, and Pedersen Transport will be driving the items from Drumheller to Slave Lake, with both volunteering the service.
Anyone interested in helping sort the donated items can contact the Drumheller IGA.
Boston Pizza is contributing to the relief efforts as well. On Wednesday, May 25, $5.00 from every medium and large pizza will be donated to the rebuilding of Slave Lake.
Monica Samuel's Grade 1 class at Greentree is also donating their unused toys to Slave Lake. They'll be sending them off Thursday morning.
