On Wednesday, May 18, at 4:50 p.m. the Hanna RCMP were dispatched to a serious two vehicle head on collision just west of Secondary Highway 855 on Highway 9. Hanna Fire and Emergency Services also attended the scene. As a result of the investigation, it is believed that a red Chevrolet Aveo, driven by a lone occupant, was traveling westbound when it collided head on with an eastbound fully loaded Super B that was hauling condensate. Both vehicles came to rest in the north ditch and the semi burst into flames. Both vehicles sustained extensive fire damage. The driver of the tractor trailer unit was able to escape from his vehicle prior to it bursting into flames. The driver of the Chevrolet Aveo was pronounced dead on scene. Highway 9 was shut down for approximately five hours while police investigated the collision. The collision is still under investigation. No charges have been laid at this time. The name of the deceased is not being released pending positive notification to the next of kin.
