Police warn of phone scam

Drumheller RCMP are warning residents of fraudulent phone calls received in town requesting donations for Cops for Kids.     On Friday, February 18, a call was received  by a Drumheller resident soliciting funds for the organization, which is a real charity. The victim agreed to make a donation, and the caller requested the victim's  credit card number. The victim asked the caller for information to be mailed to her prior to giving her credit card number. At that point the caller hung up.
RCMP confirmed there is an organization that goes by Cops for Kids, but they advised they do not solicit funds in this way.
The phone number associated to this call originated in Calgary and is unrelated to Cops for Kids.
    The investigation is ongoing.
RCMP warn residents to “be extremely suspicious of callers asking for money,” and not to give your credit card number out. They advise if contacted, ask questions, get names, phone numbers, etc.
The RCMP does not solicit for funds.
