Let's get ready to soapbox!

DSC 0087

Essex Street in the Village of Carbon was closed to traffic and spectators lined both sides of the street to cheer on racers in the fourth annual Carbon Legion 161 soapbox derby on Saturday, August 20. The event was supported through numerous community volunteers and organizations to help the event run smoothly. Kneehill County also granted $4,500 to the Legion in April to help cover the cost of a set of new starting ramps. A total of 12 racers participated—five in the kids 7-12 category, four in the teen category, and three in the adult category. Despite some challenges, ranging from one of the soapbox cars, “The Fireball,” unable to fit on the new ramps, and the Lions Club, “Pelican” and Legion “Bulldog” cars being pulled out of commission due to various issues, there was a strong community turnout. Event organizers Andrea and Brian McHugh say the three cars are repairable, though they are hoping they can get more people involved building cars for future events. Kids category first place winner Felix crosses the finish line in the Carbon Fire Department car.
