An inmate charged with assault with a weapon stemming from a July 2021 incident at the Drumheller Institution has had an 18-month concurrent sentence handed down.
Melvin Skeete, who was an inmate at the Drumheller Institution at the time of the incident, appeared via closed circuit television (CCTV) from the Atlantic Institution in New Brunswick during the hearing on Friday, May 13.
The Honourable Judge G.J. Gaschler heard how Drumheller RCMP were called to the Drumheller Institution at approximately 10 p.m. on July 20, 2021 due to a large-scale altercation in the courtyard of the Medium Security Unit.
While Skeete was not involved in the courtyard altercation, he and two other inmates were involved in a separate stabbing incident in a nearby building. Skeete was charged with assault with a weapon, noted as a “jail made stabbing weapon.”
The victim sustained multiple stab wounds in the attack.
Skeete is currently serving a life sentence from the 2010 stabbing murder of his girlfriend, Brittany Green.
Although Skeete was 16 at the time of this incident he was tried and sentenced as an adult due to the vicious nature of the attack, and Skeete’s lengthy youth record.
The Crown recommended a sentence of 18-months, served concurrently to the existing life sentence, and requested a DNA order.
