Newcastle Beach has been temporarily closed to the public as work continues on flood mitigation work.
Despite the focus on dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, work is continuing at the popular park in west Drumheller.
According to a release from the Drumheller Resiliency and Flood Mitigation Office, the temporary closing of Newcastle Beach to the public is to continue on an excavation project for flood mitigation improvements in the area. The closure is to minimize any safety hazards to the public.
“Work on the excavation project must commence immediately due to timelines imposed by legislative requirements and environmental permitting,” it states.
Earlier this spring work began at the park involving an inmate crew that cleared overgrown brush along theRed Deer River.
Work is scheduled to be completed by the third week of April, and signage has been placed in the area.
The town asks the public to follow all restrictions in the area and will update the community on any changes to access in the area.
