A new business in downtown Drumheller has had a positive experience setting up shop.
Last month Black Mountain Roasters opened on 3rd Avenue in downtown Drumheller. This is a roasting house that will be custom roasting and selling coffee as well as a coffee house that will be serving their own product.
Partners Sharon Mathieu and Nathan Moore have renovated the space and installed a state of the art roaster. Moore has been roasting for about two years. This is their first coffee house venture and they chose Drumheller.
So far Mathieu says their experience as a business person in Drumheller has been positive and supportive. At one point during them setting up they were having trouble.
“Our roaster is from Germany, so it wasn’t CSA Approved, there have been some that have been approved in Alberta, but for some reason our inspector denied it. Sean Wallace (Economic Development manager) found an inspection place, and they came in and inspected it and now we are ready to go,” said Mathieu.
She is grateful to be setting up a business in a community where there is support.
“The town has been great actually,” she said.
Wallace told the Mail success in economic development is creating a positive environment.
“One of my primary concerns is how do we create an investment ready environment to attract new opportunities and grow opportunities for existing business. We are taking steps to improve and update our processes as well as provide an educational component to set expectations navigating all 3 levels of government when it comes to starting a new business or a new commercial development,” said Wallace.
“I have been able to help a few local businesses navigating the various systems by spending time exploring the issues and coming up with solutions that work. This is why the Economic Development Office should always be the first point of contact for anyone starting a new business or commercial development. By working together we can find paths to success.”
