Futsal fans in Three Hills are putting together a bid to set a world record, and are confident they can do it.
Andrew Wood, an alumnus and staff at Prairie College in Three Hills, tells the Mail a small group that plays futsal, a version of indoor soccer, had their application to the Guinness Book of World Records accepted, and from March 28-30, will be attempting to play futsal for 50 straight hours. “We have a really big futsal community in Three Hills, we play every Sunday night and just got thinking it could be a fun event,” said Wood. “We thought there was enough crazy people at the school to do this.”
To beat the record will take more than simply people kicking a ball back and forth for 50 hours, there are strict rules. The game has to happen within FIFA regulations. Each team is allowed 12 players, and five must be on the court at all times. All the players must remain on the bench, with the exception of washroom breaks.
“We are allowed to have pillows and sleeping bags, but it all has to be right there. We are allowed to sleep,” he chuckles. “We are going to try to have three or four players sleeping at all times.”
The entire event will be live-streamed on the Prairie Pirates Facebook page, and as well, the event must be video recorded and sent into Guinness to be adjudicated.
He said the goal is to create a community-building event.
“We have some really good sponsors come along to pay for the tournament, but anything further donated over that is going to the school’s athletic department,” he said. “It is a free event for everybody, and we just want as many people who can play to come out.
To make the event possible he says they are still looking for volunteers for everything from officiating to score keeping.
“It is quite a big undertaking, but it is really coming together well.
