There are two new directors on the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce.
The Chamber held a general meeting on Thursday, October 20 at the Badlands Community Facility. The first order of business was to fill two vacancies on its board. Christopher Knight of Platinum Chemicals has retired from the Board and Rod Fox of Western Financial has left the community.
An election was held and Jason Blanke of Chinook Financial was elected to a two-year term and Brent Walker, general manager of Drumheller Co-op filled the second two-year vacancy.
Also at the meeting, the Chamber of Commerce voted to pay off its debt on the World’s Largest Dinosaur.
Director Brock Harrington explains there is still $271,000 owing on the World’s Largest Dinosaur. He proposed to use about $85,000 from the World’s Largest Dinosaur Legacy Fund, and the remaining from the Capital Repair Fund to pay off the debt. This action would not deplete either account.
He went on to say the Chamber will have to be making some important decisions in the near future on the fate of the World’s Largest Dinosaur. While they have completed a recent refurbish and have plans to install other amenities like guard rails, he says the icon is in poor shape, and may only have a lifespan of 5 to 10 years.
Director Terry Yemen said that in light of the possibility of having to make a significant investment in the future and given the low interest rate, it would be fitting to be in a position of having cash in hand rather than borrowing when interest rates could be significantly higher.
The Chamber voted to pay off the debt.
