The Atlas Coal Mine appears to be another victim on a long list of reported property damage occurring on the weekend in East Coulee.
The historical site reported damage to a wooden gate and turf to Drumheller RCMP Sunday morning, caused by what appeared to be a vehicle driving on parts of the property not regularly accessible by vehicle.
The suspect vehicle drove through an unlocked gate and caused damage which would cost the non-profit attraction a couple hundred dollars, if not for volunteers already offering to help repair the gate.
"It sucks and costs us money, but I like to look at the positive things – that no one was hurt and nothing was stolen," said Atlas interim executive director Jay Russell. "We're a non-profit and anything unexpected hurts."
Drumheller RCMP are currently investigating the incident, which may be related to an apparent spree of property damage in East Coulee which occurred early Sunday morning after a truck and motor boat was stolen from Midland, with the truck found burnt outside the Jurassic Inn around 4:30 am Sunday.
