A young Drumheller girl has decided to cut her hair for cancer, for the third time.
Emily Albright made the decision to first cut her hair for cancer when she was five and in Kindergarten. The second time she decided to do this she was eight and now she has decided to cut and donate it once again at age 10.
“It makes me feel good because I can share my gift of fast growing hair with some people who have hair loss. It also makes me feel good because I help people who do have Cancer,” Emily said.
Bold Efexx Hair Shop cut Emily’s hair the last two times she has donated, with Diosa Salon and Spa cutting it the first time, her mom Nanci said.
When she chose to have her hair cut in Kindergarten and Grade Two, she sent it to Angel Hair, but this time she is sending it to Pantene.
Emily did her own research as to where she could donate her hair, her mom said, and this one hit a bit closer to home for her.
“She has two great aunties that are fighting cancer and Pantene is geared more to women instead of children,” Nanci said.
She recalls when Emily was in Kindergarten and came home from school after an assembly where she had heard about it. “(She) said that she wanted to help kids that were sick and I didn’t totally understand what she meant... thinking she was talking about a cold or something like that but no she was talking about people that don’t have hair, so then I realized she was talking about Cancer, (and) she decided she wanted to help,” Nanci said.
Her mom told inSide Drumheller that Emily has always had lots of thick hair and when Cindy Poland, the hairstylist who cut Emily’s hair weighed it, it was 5.8 pounds that was taken off and will be donated.
“It is amazing how she is so selfless. She would do anything for anybody. In this day and age, you see this generation and sometimes it is kind of scary to see these people that will potentially be taking care of us some day, and to see Emily, her dad and I are just so proud that she is willing to give,” Nanci said.
She has cut 28 inches off in the five years she has donated her hair.
